ALBAWABA- Former President Donald Trump has been asked to throw his support behind a groundbreaking diplomatic initiative between Saudi Arabia and Israel, termed the "grand deal."
This ambitious endeavor, facilitated by President Joe Biden, is aimed at normalizing relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. The move, if successful, would reshape the Middle East's geopolitical landscape.
Senator Lindsey Graham revealed that he approached Trump to back the complex negotiations for a historic three-way agreement involving Riyadh and Tel Aviv, as quoted in The NEW ARAB.
In recent months, intensive diplomacy has centered around Riyadh, with a goal to finalize the agreement by year-end. However, conflicting interests from the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel could pose hurdles.
This deal's significance lies in potential American security guarantees that Riyadh seeks, including a clear commitment to defend the kingdom if attacked and support for a peaceful nuclear program.
Such an agreement needs a two-thirds Senate approval, challenging due to Democratic concerns about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
To secure the deal, Biden may need substantial Republican support, despite their opposition to his foreign policy, as they tend to favor Israel and past Arab-Israeli normalization agreements, known as the "Abraham Accords."
Graham's message to Trump emphasizes that this aligns with the principles of the Abraham Accords and is crucial for Middle East stability and US national security.
Meanwhile, Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and a key figure behind the Abraham Accords, has also urged Trump to support Biden's potential deal with Saudi Arabia. These developments underscore the complexity of ongoing diplomacy in the region.
