ALBAWABA – Amazon has announced on Wednesday its plans to pour $2.75 billion more into Anthropic, a startup AI company that rose to compete with industry giants like OpenAI since it was founded 3 years ago, making its total investments in the new firm top at $4 billion so far.

“We have a notable history with Anthropic, together helping organizations of all sizes around the world to deploy advanced generative artificial intelligence applications across their organizations,” said Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of Data and AI at Amazon Web Services, in a press statement.

According to Amazon’s statement, Anthropic has pledged in return to giving AWS international customers broad access to future iterations of its foundation models on Amazon Bedrock, an AWS fully managed service that assists users in creating highly capable, economically feasible, low latency generative AI applications.

Anthropic will also be utilizing AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to develop, train, and implement its future models, while it employs AWS as the main provider of its cloud services for mission-critical tasks like safety research and the creation of future foundation models.

Founded by previous OpenAI veterans like Dario Amodei, former OpenAI's Vice President of Research, in 2021 with goals of fostering the essential technological advances necessary to enable the development of more powerful, dependable, and general AI systems, and then implement these systems in a manner that benefits people, according to Amodei.

During multiple funding rounds, Anthropic was able to attract the pockets of Alameda Research and Google Cloud with $500 million and $300 million in investments, respectively, before following on OpenAI’s ChatGPT success and aiming to create their own generative AI chatbot Claude.

Comparable to ChatGPT, Claude has an online dialogue system where users may post inquires or searches and get precise and in-depth answers, however, Anthropic has taken pride in its Constitutional AI framework (CAI), which it built Claude around.

In order to guarantee that AI systems are beneficial, safe, and truthful, CAI defines a "constitution" that governs the AI model, which is made up of a number of high-level ethical standards that outline the intended conduct of the AI. The AI is then trained to prevent damage, follow preferences, and offer accurate data using these core values.

Amazon claims that according to industry benchmarks, the most intelligent and most recent AI model by Anthropic, Claude 3 Opus, has surpassed existing models, such as OpenAI's GPT-4, in the domains of mathematics, logic, and coding.

Dr. Sivasubramanian added on the collaborations between the two companies saying “Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers’ experiences, and look forward to what’s next.”
